Hi, I've tried doing these steps (for the smoke/magic effect) but it doesn't seem to want to work for me. I've changed the initial layer into an add glow layer, then added hard light etc, but it just doesn't produce the surrounding glow like it has in the second example with the hand. Any ideas where I might be going wrong? Perhaps I'm missing a step or two.

Hey there, and sorry for the slow response.

Hmm... I'm not quite sure where in the process it's gone wrong. I think maybe just one more layer with a soft brush/spray on a normal level? It should be enough to give you that soft glow effect.

You have confused me here a  bit so you do 3 different raster layers are you merging them into one later or you let them like this?

Ah, that depends on the type of file you're saving it as and if too many layers drives you nots. I typically leave all my glow/lighting layers separate from the others before saving it as a PNG, because MANGASTUDIO/ClIP STUDIO PAINT has this horrible tendency to mess up the glow layers once merged. They lose a lot of their effect, for some reason, as though merging the layers turns off the glow effect completely. So, if you MUST merge them before you save, make sure you merge ALL the layers at once with the [merge showing] option. This, for some reason, doesn't cause the glow layer to lose it's effect, and should look just as bright/shiny as it does before merging. But, either way, I generally suggest leaving them separate even to the end, just in case you need to pop back in to make any changes.

Well now, that's cool! :D I would have no idea if you hadn't told me, so thank you! And I honestly did not expect many people to make use of it, otherwise I would have... maybe... added more steps or details. [ I just threw it together for a friend. XD ]

^_^ I'm glad!
It's actually really nice to use. I've done some more painterly things in it, even though the program advertises for the Manga drawing crowd. They have some amazing brushes, and the canvas sizes are very easy to adjust while keeping the content sharp and clear.

Hmmm okay. I asked because from quite sometime I think about getting it myself. So when I see someone using it I try asking. Did it took long until you got the hang of it or was ist pretty fast?

It's actually Manga Studio/Clip Studio Paint, but i've heard that you can do a very similar effect in both Photoshop and SAI as well. It's just a matter of different layer filter names, for the most part.
